Saying “Good Bye” to My Dear Little Isabel

6a00e54f95df92883401156fe8b788970c-500wiA punch art card I made for Isabel’s 10th birthday.  Here are the details.

My dear little pug, Isabel, Stamping Zone companion and loyal friend for the last 14 years passed away last week.   We had been nursing many doggie maladies for the past couple years (blind, deaf, diabetes, arthritis) but she still loved her belly rubs and daily walks.  I carried her up to my Stamping Zone each day (often 4-5 times a day) until the last few months since I feared she might bump into the baby gate I set at the top of the stairs and take a tumble.

IMG_1675-001
Last Tuesday she became very ill and her health was rapidly deteriorating.  She refused her belly rub for the first time in 14 years.  I’m convinced she was telling me she it was time.  I gave her a warm bath, wrapped her in fluffy towels and took her outside to enjoy the Arizona sunshine for one last time.   Isabel died in my arms several hours later in peace and dignity.

I made this short video from some footage (1999) of Isabel as a 4 month old puppy and my daughter, Caroline (age 5 at the time and now in college).  These two truly “grew up” together.  Even seeing Caroline in the video as we watched this weekend makes me realize how much time has passed.   Honestly, I have probably watched it (and much more Isabel footage) 30+ times this past week.  However, the tears are now evolving slowly into smiles and I feel we can start focusing more on happy memories than loss.

Thanks for letting me share this with you.  I get many emails about seeing Isabel in my Ultimate Stamping Zone video and felt you would want to know.  I encourage you to give your pets an extra long pat on the head or a few more minutes on a walk today in celebration of the immense happiness pets bring to our lives.

  4. My sympathies to you and your family. We had to put our 12 1/2 year old yellow lab down 2 months ago and it was one of the hardest things we have ever had to do. He was part of our family since day one, so I understand what you are going through. You’ll see and hear your sweet Isabel for quite a while and it’ll be a hard up and down battle of emotions, but the bouts of pain do lessen, and those memories will make you smile and laugh. One of my favorite quotes that has helped me is this one: “Do not cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. Thank you for sharing your video. I’m sure it’s just a glimpse into the wonderful life you all shared together.

    Stampin’ hugs,

  17. Omg Mary I am so sorry for your loss. The way you stated how Isabel lived her last few moments was so poetic. It’s great that you have so much footage of your little companion. I know there will be a small vacancy in your heart forever, but just remember how much Isabel loved YOU as well, and how you gave her a great life. (We’ve never met, but I read your blog every day and used to have a dog that was like my “child.” I can’t imagine the emotions you’re going thru but I hope you can feel the love of so many stampers!)

  20. I am so sorry for your loss, I know excatly how you are feeling at the moment. A couple of years ago I had to get our cat Rambo put down, he had been healthy and fine until he came out from the bedroom. I can still now hear him cry he was draging his back legs along the ground, rushed him to the vets and they said he had a blood clot that had lodged in his spine cutting the blood supply to his back legs. Nothing they could do about it, I held him close when they put him down. We buried him in the garden and he is with us always.

I just got in from being out of the country again (it’s 2:28am) yet my loving pets, 4 wonderful dogs and 5 cuddly cats, all came running when they heard Mummy’s keys in the door…such wonderful, unconditional love they give…with tears in my eyes I have given each an extra hug, in honor of your Isabel. I am in the same boat with you because I have a sixteen year old dog (baby, best friend, buddy….) who is blind, has serious on going dental problems and is aging poorly too. I am not looking forward to the day that I will have to say goodbye to my baby. Celebrate the life instead of mourning the death. It helps to look at it that way for me and I hope that it helps you. I am truly sorry for your loss. As Dolly Pardon put it in Steel Magnolia’s, ” There is no better emotion than laughter through tears”. That’s how we get through these tough losses. My prayer for you and yours is that God will heal your broken hearts with beautiful memories. I’m thinking of you and hope you can laugh again in the future with another furry friend to love.

  26. I am so sorry for your loss. I never had pets growing up and didn’t understand why people would refer to them as “family”. When I found out I couldn’t have children, I went and adopted two cats. It was the best thing that I have ever done for myself. They give love unconditionally and always seem to know when you need some extra love. I am sorry for your loss.

  48. So sorry for your loss Mary. I too had a beautiful furry little girl that blessed my life for almost 14 years. I called her my first born even though I did not give birth to her. She was my little baby girl as as she progressed into old age she became riddled with arthritis and became blind and deaf and I too had to carry her everywhere. I was with her when she passed and held her close as she took her last breath. She waited for me to return from work. I miss her dearly but I know that she is always with me. It took about 18 months until I was ready to open my heart to a new little one. I’ve now had my new little girl for 7 years and love her to bits. Time will heal your heart and will turn each memory to a smile.

I am so sorry at your loss; I have loved your stories of Isabel helping you stamp and I am sure that she will be missed by all of those that follow your blog.

I am volunteer with an animal rescue group in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and I can tell you that Isabel was a very lucky girl to have you as pet parent. Sadly, we see many pets get abandoned to shelters once they reach a certain age or develop certain illnesses; it is such a hardship on the poor animals and on those that struggle to find them a good home. I am so sad for you loss and yet at the same time so grateful that you were there for sweet Isabel when she needed you the most! Bless you!

  92. Heart breaking. I know exactly what you are going through. What joy pets being to our lives and they ask so little in return. We will be facing the same thing soon as our lab, Annie, was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. I worry everyday that she is suffering even though she looks and still acts so happy. I’m so sorry for you and your family.

  94. Oh my, It is hard to know what to say when this happens. But I know how you are feeling Mary. I lost my Trudy dog (pug) 9yrs old on Feb 26th this year. She also was my loyal companion, sweetest dog I have have ever had, and my best little buddy. She stamped with me daily. I still carry her with me daily on my phone. This was truly hard so I definitely know how you are feeling. I am so sorry for your loss Mary. Prayers to you and your family.

  97. I’m so sad to hear about Isabel….losing the family pet is SO hard. We lost our beloved Cocker Spaniel, Sasha 5 years ago this last June 30. She was 4 months short of her 12th birthday and we had had her since she was 2 months old. She, too, had some health problems but was doing fine. She had cataracts, blindness and a couple of other things that we had to deal with for about 3 years but she just passed her yearly exam two weeks before she passed and she had her last grooming one week before she past, so she was all beautiful. Her vet said that she died because her spleen ruptured and that there are no tests for that so there was no way for us to know that she had a problem there. That made it a bit easier, but still hard.

Anyway, thinking good thoughts for you and your family and know that Isabel is now no longer suffering and is probably having a good time with all the other doggies in doggie heaven! Hang in there!

  104. Mary, I am so sorry about your loss of little Isabel. We have two pugs (brothers from the same litter) and we love them with all our heart. It sounds like your little girl was very loved and that’s the best gift you can give a pet. I’m glad that you are finally able to smile a little, even though I know it’s still incredibly hard not to have her. Sending pug love from my family to yours.

  105. Mary I was so very sad when I read your post this morning. I too lost my sweet Crystal this past February. A very difficult loss, she was only 9. She was the fourth in the line of pugs in my life. I adore them. A pug is something special. They add so much to your lives. No other breed compares, as far as I am concerned. She had the most personality of any dog we have had. The companionship is greatly missed! Our pets just don’t stay long enough!

I know that you live in Tucson. I live in Prescott. We got our Crystal from a breeder in the Tucson/Marana area. I know that she is planning another breeding this fall. I think I am ready to add another pug to our lives. Hopefully the breeding takes!

By the way, have you ever read “Clara: The Story of the Pug Who Ruled my Life” by Margo Kaufman? I very fun read about pugs. I reread it after I lost Crystal. You can find it at Amazon.

    I loved your video.

    Hugs to you, DeeDee

P.S. I too made your Isabel card a couple of years back!

There are some who think it’s foolish to weep
Over a cherished pet in eternal sleep.
Both those poor souls are truly blind
For they know not of the creature king.
But you who devoted so many years
Deserve the time to shed those tears
Over the loss of your furry friend
Whose life on earth has come to an end.
And may the tears that you now weep
Sow loving memories forever to keep.

  118. I’m so sorry, Mary. I know how hard it is when you lose a long time furry friend. My Weimaraner, Greta, passed away similarly after 11 beautiful years. She loved our pear trees and would sit under them gorging herself on pears most of the fall season. The season after she died, the trees had almost no fruit. I always thought they must have mourned her somehow. The year after it was a bumper crop. Life has it seasons. May you be comforted knowing she had a sweet life full of love.

She got glaucoma and went blind and eventually we had to have both of her eyes removed because she had ruptured one. She was a happy girl and could get around all over the house and outside. We have another beagle named Penelope and got her as a puppy and she would help Molly get around the house and let us know if she wandered too far outside. 195. Puppy hugs and smooches from our Chiko to you and your family. May the Lord comfort you during this difficult time in your lives. May He bring you blessings as you reminisce about the great times with your Isabel. Thinking of you. Adios, glad

  196. Mary, I am so sorry, when our sweet pet companions must leave us, it is such a hurt and we miss them so very much. Try to think of all the good times with Isabel as you heal.
