  7. Though I have a lot of wood mount, I much prefer the clear mount stamps. They work just as well but take up less room storage wise and I can see where I am stamping which means I don’t have to rely on my stamp-a-ma-jig quite as much. Advantages all the way around!

  8. I love the old school look and feel of wood mount. They stir up a bit of nostalgia for me. I even like when the wood gets stained from the ink sometimes. It just makes me love them more. I do have some clear stamps but the wood mounted stamps really make me happy. 😉

  9. I am definitely a wood-mount fan. I don’t want to have to take the time to mount my stamp each time and change it for a new image.

  10. I would have to say I like the clear mount stamps much better now that I’ve tried them out. I love that you can see the placement, that they take up less storage space, and you can see the stamps in the set right on the spine of the package.

  13. I try and figure out how I will use the stamps-if there would be alot of taking on/off with the clear mount, I get wood mount. I like wood mount for anything that will probably be punched out and also for very small stamps. I do love the storage of the clear mount and like the clear mount for larger stamps. I also find I purchase seasonal stamps in clear mount-mostly for the storage issue.

  14. Which style I prefer depends on the stamp set. Since the clear has come out, I have ordered some clear sets & some wood mount sets. The clear is fun for putting several together to create your own stamp, but I still use the stamp-ma-jig to make sure I get things just right when doing a 2-step stamp.

  17. I was very resistant to the clear mount stamps. I’ve used “clear stamps” that were non-SU and didn’t have much luck. But, a friend bought a SU clear set and said I had to try……well, one try and I’m hooked. I LOVE that you can mount several stamps on one block and know that your images will come out exactly the way you want them. And, the bonus is that they are cheaper!

  20. clear mount is my favorite by far – have even taken some of my favorite wood mounts off the block, coated them thinly with alene’s tack it over and over, let it dry really well, and used like a clear mount. far less mistakes with clear and cheaper especially if they are quality clear ones. cheap ones are bad news.

  36. I like both and can’t decide. Clear mount wins for price and storage.
What I like about my wood mounts is I know exactly where that image is going to land, because the rubber mount doesn’t change. With clear mount, I seem to mount it in a slightly different place each time. It’s hard to know where I am stamping with the clear mount, even tho that is it’s selling point.

  47. Hands down I’m a clear mount fan. The ability to group multiple stamps together on one block and the ease of placement without resorting to my SAMJ are two of the best reasons. With a grouping I can stamp multiples (can anyone say easy swaps!) quickly and with precise results. And the cost savings don’t hurt either. I’ve been slowly converting many of my wood mount stamps now that I found a simple and economical method from Jaydee on her blog post here – http://www.jaydeestamping.com/weblog/2010/02/happy-moments-unmounting-wood-mount-stamps-to-be-clear-mount-usable-tutorial.html

So far everything that I have purchased is clear mounted unless there was no choice and I had to get the wood mounted. I do like that it is easier to see where I am placing my image with the clear. Also, the clear are easier to me to assemble when I first get them. I think the wood mounted are a little tricky to mount. But I haven’t had much practice. I think the blog candy is so cute. 68. Hmm…although I enjoy them both, I have to say for some reason I seem to get a more crisp image with the wood mount, but the clear is to die for because I can always see where I am stamping and the storage is so much more suitable than the wood mounted. So, I guess I have to say the CLEAR MOUNT !

  71. I am used to the wood mounted but to save money and space I believe I will experiment with clear. Stampin’ UP’s clear blocks fit well in the hand and seem to keep the stamp stuck.

  72. I really like the new clear stamps. I am much more “on-target” when I stamp. I need to purchase a second set of the blocks though. I find myself constantly changing stamps and blocks when trying to do multiple projects.
I also like the way the clear-mount stamps are stored. They are so much more user-friendly. I have mine stored on a DVD rack, and can see at a glance what is in each case, as opposed to my wood-mount stamps. They are in piles on a table, and I have to hunt for a stamp I want. It’s even worse when I don’t have a specific stamp in mind and have to search through every set of wood-mount stamps for an appropriate stamp.
Thanks for the chance to win blog candy and for the daily emails. I especially loved your tutorials for organizing paper and other items. I’m constantly looking for new and better ways to organize my supplies. Any great ideas for punches? 🙂

  91. While the clear-mount stamps are mighty tempting – especially when the price difference is quite significant, I prefer the old-fashioned wooden sets. My hands are little unsteady, so foregoing one more step is easier for me. When I’m ready to stamp (and when am I not?!?), using wood-mount stamps allows me to get down to business.

Great question – interesting to read the very varied replies!

    Reply
  92. There are so many pros and cons to both. The important thing to me is the quality of Stampin’ Up rubber that produces clear crisp images. I LOVE the storage space I save with clear mount, but I don’t like having to mount them to the blocks every time I want to use them. I also have to remake my Stamp a ma jig sheet every time. With wood mount I make my Stamp a ma jig sheets on velum and keep them in the case.

  94. I always knew your blog was popular, but almost 600 comments already??? Was a bit reluctant to try clear mount as I was satisfied with the wood-mount sets I already had. However, I now realize the clear mount has its advantages: less storage, less expensive (once you buy the blocks), easier placement without the Stamp-a-ma-jig, and versatility allowing more than one stamp on the block and use of multiple inks. Think I’ve been converted and hope I win your fabulous blog candy. Thanks for your inspiration and generosity!

  96. I love the clear mount stamps and buy the clear-mount SU! sets whenever available. I have mounted my previously unmounted stamps on clear staic-cling vinyl. There are no labels but it doesn’t bother me that much. I have found it easy to remount older non-diecut wood sets on new foam that has cling but find the diecut ones more difficult to remount on thick new foam due to the rounded shapes. As A SU! demonstrator you can imagine the collection of stamps I have! Remounting them or buying clear mount saved me a lot of storage space!

  127. Honestly, I’m on the fence. I like that clear sets take up less space when not in use and I like to see, sort of, where I’m stamping through the clear block, but I feel like I am having to touch the stamp too much with my hands and fingers, and I fear this will affect the longevity of the stamp. Also, it takes more time to get going. You have a couple extra steps before you get to the ink. The wood block stamps I think will last longer (I could be wrong), and get you stamping quicker. I am glad Stampin’ Up did not go with acrylic stamps because I’ve tried those and did not like them. You have to touch them way too much for normal use. They stain right away (and I’m a fanatic about cleaning my stamps). They turn yellow and have a chemical smell after a while. I loved being able to see exactly where I stamp, but the other factors outweighed that. I will always be a loyal Stampin’ Up customer because of their quality products and wonderful designs, in both paper and stamps.

  128. Definitely the clear mount. Keeping the whole piece of rubber has really helped. Mounted stamps go right back in the place they were punched out of so they are easier to locate (they don’t roll all around the container). It is also quick and easy to see when one is missing.

In my real world, however, I’m glad SU has gone to clear mount so I keep up with my addiction without fear of having to make a guest appearance on that reality TV show about hoarders! I’m not sure I’m going to change my hundreds of old sets to clear mount, but at least I have the option to do so if I need to.

  132. Mary,

This is actually a difficult question for me, because I have not completely made up my mind yet. I think I prefer the new clear mount, but still hold tight to my wood mounted ones. I like how at class people dont have to change out the stamps on the clear blocks & are waiting on one another. I also like the way you can really scrub the wood blocked stamps. I think in the end I will adjust to these things & the clear mount benefits will outrule the wood blocks. Thank you for the chance to win blog candy!

  165. I have both clear mount and wood mount stamps, and after using both extensively, I’ll have to say I prefer wood mount.

    Wood mount is better when:
    * You have tiny stamps (like Rough Type) because they are easy to lose in clear mount, and harder to lose when they have a big wooden block stuck to them
    * You are switching back and forth between stamps. I have two copies of my most common clear mount blocks, but when I’m using stamps with a lot of parts (like Awash with Flowers), I hate having to unmount and remount stamps
    * You are cleaning the stamps. The largest clear-mount stamps may stick to their blocks when using the Stampin’ Scrub, but the little ones don’t have a chance.
    * A lot of people are using the stamps. At a workshop or just when friends get together, it’s better to have a mount for every stamp instead of a clear-mount block for every person.

Unfortunately I am very unhappy with the sticker that goes on the stamps. Once you put that on, the stamp doesn’t stick very well to the clear block anymore. I use the Stamp-a-majig a lot and if the stamp just shifts slightly on the clear block, the image won’t match up! Other companies (for example clear mount stamps from Stampendous) don’t seem to have that problem. At the moment I don’t use the sticker at all.

Either I could part with some of my existing sets so I could get new ones, or I could just not buy any new stamps. SU saved the day with the clear mount stamps, it is like they could read my mind and new what was going on. So, thanks to clear mount stamps, I can now store my new stamp sets in my former DVD storage shelf…..and I have room to buy so many more!!! Thanks SU for clear mount stamps!!

  249. Hi Mary!

Lots of great comments here and I want to share my opinion on this too.

I have to be honest and say that I don’t really love one way over the other.

Although I have been “forced” to unmount my rubber stamps and have been doing so for YEARS – ran out of room and even unmount my wheels – there is something to the convenience of just grabbing a wood block mounted stamp and using it immediately.

There are downsides to both – wood mounts take up so much room when you have accumulated a “collection” and you can’t see where you are stamping when using them.

Cling mount stamps can be hard to keep track if they’re stored in bins (like mine are) and sometimes they don’t cling very well.

I too have experienced problems with clear/cling mount stamps falling off and ruining something but there are other methods to ensure that doesn’t happen.

I’ve also been in a class situation where I didn’t have the right block for the stamp I wanted to use.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages and neither one is ideal in my opinion!

  256. I am seriously in love with clear-mount sets. I think SU made a smart decision in keeping the red rubber and foam together. I’ve used several brands of stamps and I’ve always loved the ease of use that cling stamps offer but I’ve never felt that the image result held up to the traditional wood mount stamps, particularly SU’s. Side by side, I personally see no difference in the way SU’s sets perform. The benefits of the new stamps, storage, price, ease of use and quality have made for a major win all around!

I have purchased some EZ mount to change over some of my old wood stamps, so it?s clear mount for me whenever available.

  290. I prefer the wood mount. I also love that I can just reach into a wood set and start stamping. I do like the clear mount because it takes up less space and because the images can be mounted simultaneously on one block. But for very precise stamping, I still use my stamp-a-ma-jig. I’ve had the clear mount slide off the blocks while cleaning them. But I did learn to trim the image stickers exposing a bit of cling. That helps solve that issue.

Also, as a demo I prefer to purchase some clear mount so my customers can see the difference. The quality of the stamped images is great. But I’ve run into problems planning stamp camps using multiple clear mount sets because I don’t have a lot of the blocks. My business is growing, so I may purchase more blocks.

  300. Mary: I love the clear mount stamps for the following reasons. Storage, thoughI wish there was an easier way of keeping track of the pieces. (I currently keep the piece of rubber the stamps come in, adhere it to the case using the non sticky side and sticky strip. I then peel the paper cover off and dust the sticky side with my embossing buddy as this allows me to see my stamp labels when I open the case). Placement-easy to see when I am stamping and lastly and most importantly the cost is a less thus allowing me more stamps for my crafting dollar!

I hear this once in awhile, too. I shared a tip about having a “Three Second Rule” The clear mount stamps need to be held on the clear block for a few seconds before they bond. Learned this at convention last year. Three seconds should work . . . maybe a couple seconds longer for tiny stamps. I even manage to clean them while they are still on the blocks so they are hanging on! Hugs and good luck, Mary

  349. I love the clear mount stamps. You can mount more than one stamp at a time and line them up prior to stamping. Then you can see exactly where they are going to “land” on your paper. Love them!

  350. I actually like both, depends on the situation. I like the clear mount when placement is imnportant and it’s fun to combime two on one block. And of course storage are lesser. But I prefer wood block when placement is vital (with stamp-a-ma-jig). They also seem more durable and I feel like I have more control, sometimes the clear mount move on me.

  352. Clear mounted or wood mounted — that is the question!
I do love the “sturdiness” of the wood mounted stamps. However, I am coming to be a big fan of the new clear mounted SU! stamps. I especially like the clear mounts for sentiment positioning or for any design that also require specific positioning.
I’ve found that most wood mounted give good, clear images. However, depending on the quality, clear mounted may or may not give clear images. I have learned to be very cautious about the brands of clear mounts that I purchase.
Thanks, Mary, for give us the opportunity to win some COOL BLOG CANDY!

  354. Mary, I really like both the clear mount and the wood mount. I am now buying mostly clear mount, since I can buy more, and they take alot less room to store. But the ones I think I will use the most, I am getting the wood mount, I think they will last longer. I have never had a wood mount wear out, or even look worn, and I do have one of the first clear mount look worn, so I feel there is a chance that they might not last as long. I really enjoy following your blog, you always have the best ideas, and everything is just Wonderful.

Look at me…I am on the fence…about to fall off – oh please pick me.

  364. I prefer the clear mount for the visibility when stamping, the compact storage and the lower price. I do like the sturdiness of my wood mount stamps. However, clear mount would win out over wood.

I like the ease of initial preparation for the clear mounts too. I do wish they could improve the cling aspect to be a bit stronger though. Oh, and the cases don’t always stay shut. Just a couple observations on room for improvement.

  367. Hey Mary,

That is a good question to ask. I have both clear and mounted stamps. I have to be honest and say I love the clear mount for several reason. They are easy to place and see. I also love the way you can store them and they don’t take up a lot of room. I have a full dresser full of SU mounted stamps that take up a ton of room. We all know that smart storage in our craft rooms are a must!! Thanks for all your wonderful ideas!!

  368. clear mount! clear mount! clear mount! the storage is a major plus, but my biggest advantage is a toss up between transporting many sets and the side images on the box. i do a class at the library and take lots of sets. the side images are so nice for searching quickly for an idea (i do have a ‘master picture inventory’ book) and pulling it off the shelve. also, it is easy to replace the RIGHT stamp in the right box after a customer has placed it in the wrong box (but i love their eagerness to be helpful!) THANKS FOR YOUR BLOG i hit it daily and suggest it to friends, you do a great job. love it. Donna

They take up less space, you can place more than one on a block, they help avoid placement error, you can separate words from an image and place it where you would like. I could go on and on 🙂 Thanks for all of your fabYOUlous time and effort on your blog. It truly is my favorite one to visit!!

  468. I love both for different reasons, but I LOVE my wood mount the most. They are both great but the wood mount
is the best for me. I love being able to just grab the
stamp and I’m ready but the clear mount I have to get the block and get the stamp to cling which I sometimes
have trouble with ( even with the 3 second rule).

  469. I prefer the clear mount stamps for storage reasons and they are slightly easier to line up when stamping. I still need my stamp-a-ma-jig if I need exact placement since they aren’t clear. I’ve found I don’t put the stickers on the back side because they don’t stick to the blocks as well with it on and you can’t be sure they are lined up exactly for placement either. I’m mostly a hobby demo but when I have had a stamp a stack I’ve found the wood mounted stamps are easier because I don’t have to have as many blocks.

  470. I am starting to like Clear Mount more and more. Still have some wood ones but will be buying clear whenever I can.

  472. Hands down, clear-mount. I bought my first few clear-mount sets with my last order, and I am now a true believer! I love how they combine the versatility of clear acrylic stamps with the tried-and-true bold images of Stampin Up!’s rubber stamps. The storage is great! They save me a lot of space in my already tiny crafting area.

  473. I am gonna have to be in the minority and say wood mount. I ordered a couple sets in clear mount, but don’t have the best luck getting them to stay on the blocks. I have messed up a few projects when the inked stamp droped off on to my paper.

  474. I would have to say that after using the clear mount stamps that I absolutely love them. I would also love to know how to purchase that bag if I don’t win it!

  475. Wood mount all the way for me. I have purchased a few clear sets and they haven’t converted me yet. It’s a great product just not for me. Call me old fashion but I love using my stamp-a-ma-jig. You always get the exact precise placement when combining stamp sets or just stamping on your project. Love your blog candy giveaway so very chic! Thank You Mary!!
P.S. If this is double posted, sorry! When submitting the first time something didn’t work right. Hope this doesn’t take me out of the running.

  476. I have to admit, I prefer wood mount. I have 1 set of cling stamps and they don’t want to stay on the block. However, I do like the price savings on the cling stamps. I may try another set in cling to play with it again.

  477. I have only used the wood mount stamps but do believe once I get my hands on a clear mount I will convert. I think they would make it easier to line up and I have noticed they are lower in cost.

  478. While I am purchasing more Clear Mount stamps than I ever thought I would (love the space saving storage, money saving cost, and the easier placement of the image – especially words and sentiments), I still PREFER my WOOD MOUNTS. Like several other posters, I find the tiny stamps are difficult to store, and clean in the clear mounts. Stampin’ Up! has made the choice a lot more difficult for me, but for now, I’m still leaning toward Wood Mounts.

  491. I love clear. I appreciate the lower prices on the clear mount. Times are tough economically and you can still get a set you love even if you can’t afford it. Also the clear take up alot less room to store! Last I love the clear blocks. I love the curve on the sides. Clear blocks I have used in the past are thin and often wobble when you stamp with them. SU blocks are thick and stamp just like a wood block! If you have not bought a block yet get one! D is an awesome one to start with. Most of the stamps fit on it!

Although I love the new clear stamps (beter storage and see thru to stamp) – I am a true diehard and love my wood a little bit more. I think when I stamp that it is a sturdier way to stamp and I can always use and upsell the stamp-a-ma-jig.

The wood mount blocks took so much space to store and with limited space in my craft room the clear mounts are much more efficient! Plus, I love the way I can see where I am placing my image on my project. I am so impressed with how well and clear the images come out also! So I LOVE the clear mounts!!

  508. I really thought I was a wood mount person all the way until I tried the new clear mounts. I have tried other clear mounts with the polymer stamp but they simply do not hold up through the years. Stampin Up kept the high quality rubber and their clear mounted stamps are much better than the other kind. I am buying most things in clear now because of the storage issue. But there is nothing like the feel of stamping with wood mounted stamps.

  509. I have always preferred SU wood mounts for the amazing stamped image. I do like the clear mounts, but I seem to have trouble with them slipping off the block more than I’d like. They are easier to position and get almost exactly where needed every time. and easier to store. hmmm…I’m not sure if I answered or not. I guess I like SU!’s rubber mounted on clear blocks best 🙂

  521. Hello Mary: I like the clear mount stamps. They are easy to work with since I can see where I put the stamp on the paper and they are more economical as well. For the wood stamps, I love the soft curve of the wood and the look of it but, until I get the stamp-a-ma-jig, it’s always a bit harder to keep the stamp straight. The blog candy looks fantastic so, good luck to me!!!!!!

  526. Wow, what a great ?. I was resistant to clear mount but went ahead and got them and I LOVE THEM. Placement is easier on the paper and you can use 2 kinds of ink from pads because you can see through them so well along with storage and ease of assembly and once the investment in the blocks are made, which are superior to anything else out there, the sets are less expensive and you get your $ back real quick. I do like how the wood feels when I stamp but hands down clear mount wins my vote.
Thanks for the blog candy chance and you are an inspiration to me. Paula
