Branch Out in Black and White

Stampin up branch out

Well, almost black and white.  I enjoy making one element pop and the bird from the Branch Out set received a teeny dose of Real Red.

I wanted to share a few "sleeper" Stampin' Up! products today.  First is the Oval Scallop Frame Bigz Die.  Using a Big Shot, I zipped it through with Whisper White to create the oval playing field for my tree.  Using Stampin' Up!'s On Board Chipboard (comes in 5 3/4" x 13 3/4" sheets–works with any Bigz or Originals Dies), I zipped it through again to create a 3-D frame.  The third time through, I used the new Taste of Textiles Black Linen Paper, rich, rich, rich.  It layered perfectly over the chipboard frame.  Slick.  Here's another example using the On Board Chipboard (sheets) and the Top Note Die.

The Branch Out tree looks amazing layered in different greens.  However, I opted to try it using using Basic Black, Basic Gray and Whisper White from the Kwerner Color Inspiration #45.  I deviated only slightly with a touch of Going Gray and the bit of Real Red.

The tree was stamped in Jet Black Stazon.  TIP:  Basic Black would be fine, too.  I personally like the coverage of the Black Stazon.  Basic Gray and Going Gray leaves were stamped over the branches.  The Real Red bird was stamped on Whisper White, snipped out and perched on the tree.

The birthday sentiment is from Wow Flowers.  It was inked in Basic Gray and stamped on Going Gray.  The Word Window Punch and a strip of Stampin' Dimensionals completed the look.

The pretty Basic Gray patterned paper for the card base and envelope is from the Patterns Pack Designer Series Paper II (Hostess Level 1).  I cropped the corners with a Ticket Corner Punch, layered it on Whisper White and added a Silver Brad in each corner.  The Basic Gray card base is 4.25 x 5.5 and scored on the side.

TIP:  Give your cards added polish by adding coordinating designer paper to the envelope flap. Add the adhesive directly to the outside of the flap so you can be sure to cover to the very edges, flip it over and cut away the excess.

  1. Mary,

I have a class tomorrow morning and was planning on using the chipboard with the oval scallop frame die. I have tried everything and CAN NOT get it to cut through the chipboard. Do you have any handy tips or tricks that you used to do this?

    Desperately,

Hi Ronette: This is a good question for SU demo support. I’m guessing you need to play with your sandwich/tension. It should work 🙂

    Hugs, Mary

  2. This is Fabulous! I love the colors you chose . What a fresh take on this set. I have seen it done in many colors but I never thought of Black and White. The scalloped chipboard border really sets it off. Nice Job! Thanks for being so inovative and for always sharing the “how to’s”

    Hugs,

    Heidi

  3. Mary, you did it again. You used Basic Gray in a set that I would never have thought of. I have this set, and I’m excited about it, but gray didn’t figure in any of my imaginings. Leave it to you to work it in. I love this set, because it is good for any season. I love your wintry look, and the red bird pops. You have an incredible creative imagination!

  4. You have brought back some sweet, sweet memories. David and I lived in Wisconsin for a very long time and one of our favorite places to go in the winter was Door County. There is a DC native whose art was very similar to this picture. She painted birch trees in the snow with one or two tiny bright red cardinals sitting somewhere in the picture. Their names are Fred and Ethel! We bought one of her pictures just before we moved. Thanks for the memory and sharing another piece of your beautiful art.

  5. Now that’s what I’m talking about! I really love the elegance. Every element works really well. This is one I’d make and never give away!

  6. Gorgeous!!! What a super elegant card! I recently attended a wedding where most of the color was black (think black tuxes, black satin bridesmaids dresses), with a few touches of white (the white sash of the dresses and white shirt of the tuxes) and a single pop of red in the bride’s red roses (only) she carried. Like your card, I was floored by the combination. Thanks!

  7. This is very pretty — all the layering is cool (the tree is especially nice). And I took a peek at your craft room and it’s AWESOME! So jealous! ^_^

  9. Mary, this is just gorgeous!!! What a first class design! I too prefer the look of Jet Black Staz-On versus Basic Black Classic – it’s more of a pure black. Terrific job with this card!
