Mad for Monograms

Stampin_up_jeremy
Do you think I should add a category for just "boy cards?"  OK, perhaps "masculine" cards sounds more appropriate.  I always find male cards difficult in the world of rubber stamping where flowers, butterflies and flourishes reign.  However, my 30 something nephew and godson, Jeremy, has a birthday coming up.  He recently stopped by to help me with a little "issue" with my universal remote control (he understands these things) and was headed off to a Wild Turkey meeting afterward (I'm hoping he meant the game bird and not the bourbon).  In either case, he's not a flowers and butterflies kind of guy.

Hence, the beauty of the monogram.  Classic.  Unisex.  I just received Stampin' Up!'s Schoolbook Serif Alphabet and it's divine.  It stamps crisp letters and is large enough that you can snip out the letters if you choose (although I'm still on the snipping "wagon" from my cutting fest several days ago).  I just may become a monogram maven with this new set (and imagine the possibilities of building "custom" words).

The 5 x 5" base is in Wild Wasabi Textured card stock.  Two coordinating pieces of Jersey Shore Designer Paper arrive next. TIP:  I used a word window punch to create a peek-a-boo sentiment.  The sentiment was isolated with a Brilliant Blue Stampin' Up! marker, from the Lots of Thoughts Sale-A-Bration set, and stamped on Whisper White card stock.  I lined it up behind the open "window" and Voil?!  The horizontal banner is Wild Wasabi Textured card stock, which has enough texture to stand on it's own with out all the weight of layers.

Using Papertrey's Borders and Corners Squares set, I stamped a multi-line square in Wild Wasabi on Whisper White card stock.  TIP:  I then used a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to easily and accurately place the "j."  Some Brilliant Blue brads dot the corners.  The image was mounted on Brilliant Blue card stock using Stampin' Dimensionals and layered again on Pumpkin Pie.  The last touch was a couple bits of Striped Grosgrain in Pumpkin Pie.

I think he'll enjoy this (although perhaps not as much as bonding with his pals at the Wild Turkey meeting . . . difficult to compete with).

Hugs and Pretties . . . . Mary

  1. YES Mary, Please, add a masculine category! SCG ideas are very few. I do cards for my Boss’ SIX kids! Do I have kids?, No. I try to use what I have & find Masculine cards most difficult. Did a monogram letter via computer, never again! Rubber stamping it is the only way to go. Also recently did card for Boss’ son, His 16th Bday. It was late.., I used the Scallop Bday, dimensioned it on coordinating DP, put Teal Ribbon as if it was a Ribbon he won. Colors from stripped DP by SU. Never posted on SCG but thinkin’ I should. I’m all for closing the gender gap:)

  2. Hi Mary,

Awesome card with great masculine color combinations. I loved the Monogram idea. Just like many others I struggle to create masculine cards as well. I think this is real neat. And guess what I recently bought the borders stamp set from PTI as well. So, I am interested in trying this kind of card. Will let you know how it came out.

  3. Hi Mary! I think a section for masculine cards would be very helpful. I also wanted to say that I like your new color scheme, but I miss seeing your picture in color. 🙁
Thanks for your endless flow of creative ideas!

  4. I always struggle with masculine cards, especially since the men I make cards for have such different interests. Some like sports, others hunting and fishing, still others are into old cars or electronics. It would cost a bundle to have stamps to cover every one of these interests and using the alphabet stamps sounds like the perfect answer. Thank you Mary. Next – help with sympathy cards…….I never know how to handle those. LOL

  5. LOVE the bright happy colors! I don’t usually use ribbon on “guy” cards but this little snip you used is perfect and doesn’t look feminine at all.

I use cars, trains, planes, boats, leaves, deer, ducks, pheasants, elephants, tools, men, on masculine cards but hadn’t really thought of monograms. A whole new word opens up! Thanks!
